spread of opensource software

I have been using kubuntu on my laptop and I am very pleased with how well it works as a desktop environment. To get it to work the way I wanted I had to do a lot of geek type stuff that the average pc user would not do because of a lack of knowled, lack of skill, and lack of desire.

I use open source software (oss) becasue of ethical reasons as well as that I prefer the operating environment and find the applications work better than most proprietary software (also its really inexpensive).

Over the past ten years Linux has moved from a tecky server thing to a good desktop environment. Five years ago, the linux desktop environment was ok but you needed to be a real geek to get it to work well. GToday, distros like ubuntu, linspire, easy mepis, and vector make getting started with linux as a sesktop easy. THe desktops are a snap to install and have very good funtionality right out of the box. It is only when one wants to do things out of the ordinary like install windows codecs that it becomes geeky. I bet in a few more years this will change.
